Saturday 5, morning

I was up early working on pictures and posting, but we got a rather late start out of the hotel. Breakfast at 10:00 at a streetside cafe and then we bought our tickets for the Barcelona tourist buses. There are three routes - red, blue and green - and you can get on and off buses and switch routes as often as you like. We started out on the red route and headed towards the Passeig de Gracia, heart of the Eixample district, the extension of the city planned by the engineer Cerdá. Here we saw the Pedrera (Gaudi's Casa Milá), considered the pinnacle of the modernist movement, and then went on to the Sagrada Familia. This cathedral is Gaudi's most emblematic work, a symbol of Barcelona all over the world. Gaudí took over the work in 1883 - and it is still going on. Since his death in 1926 work has progressed somewhat erratically and not without a certain amount of controversy. It is funded by anonymous donations, including the entrance fees which visitors pay. We did not go into the cathedral as lines circled the block for admitance and we only have this one day to see Barcelona.

We walked back to the Passeig de Gracia and took the blue line, disembarking in Plaza d'Espanya where many of the buildings were constructed in 1929 for the international Exhibition. We went up to the Palau Nacional, which towers over the city and now houses the National Museum of Catalan Art. After making our way down the levels to the Plaza we continued along the blue line to the Poble Espanyol stop.

This village was built for the 1929 Exhibition and features replicas of 117 building of Spanish popular architecture. It has been transformed into an entertainment center with traditional crafts workshops, restaurants and areas for performing and fine arts exhibits. We had lunch in the "Plaza Mayor" and walked through the village, entering the shops and exhibits. Again we viewed Miró prints and some of the same Picasso ceramics which we had seen replicas of in Soller at the beginning of our trip. Although lunch was the one disappointing meal of our entire trip, we thoroughly enjoyed the rest of our visit to Poble Espanyol.
